About easy Sudoku

What they are

An easy Sudoku starts with 38 to 42 numbers already in place, so nearly half the board is done before you pick up a pencil. Our rater only files a grid here if it can be finished with naked singles: squares where every digit but one is already ruled out by its row, column and box.

How to play

Fill the 9×9 board so each row, each column and each 3×3 box holds the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. Pick a digit, say 5, and look at every box that is still missing it; usually the other fives on the board leave just one empty square where it can go.

Tips

Scan for the most common digit first, since it has the fewest gaps left. Work box by box rather than square by square, and write a number in only when you are sure. If you get stuck, count what each nearly-full row is missing.

Who they suit

These grids suit children from about seven, adults trying Sudoku for the first time, and anyone who wants a calm ten minutes. Teachers use them as a logic warm-up because pupils can check their own work against the answer page.

Printing

Each puzzle prints large on a single sheet, or two or four to a page for a stack of practice grids. The solution is on a separate page, so you can hand out the puzzle without spoiling it.

Easy Sudoku questions

Between 38 and 42 of the 81 squares are filled in. More givens means more starting points and fewer places a digit can hide.

No. Every easy grid on this page can be solved by finding squares with only one possible digit, so you can solve in pen if you like.

Most children can start at seven or eight once they can hold the row, column and box rule in mind. Younger solvers often enjoy them with a grown-up reading out which numbers are missing.
