About medium Sudoku

What they are

Medium Sudoku gives you 32 to 36 starting numbers and asks for at least one step beyond spotting obvious singles. Every grid at this level needs a hidden single, a pointing pair, a box-line reduction or a naked pair somewhere along the way, which is where most solvers first start making notes.

How to play

The rule never changes: digits 1 to 9 once each in every row, column and box. What changes is the method. Instead of asking which digit fits a square, ask where a digit can go inside one row or box. When only one square can take it, that is a hidden single.

Tips

Light pencil marks pay off here. Note the two or three candidates in each tricky square, then look for two squares in a box that share the same pair; those two digits can be erased from the rest of that box. Revisit the whole grid after every new number.

Who they suit

This level fits regular solvers, confident older children and puzzle fans who finish easy grids in a few minutes and want to slow down. It also works for a classroom challenge after pupils have mastered the basic rules.

Printing

Print one big grid when you want room for candidate notes, or four smaller ones for a commute. Medium grids look best on plain paper in black ink; the answer key prints separately.

Good to know

Medium Sudoku questions

It is a digit that can go in only one square of a row, column or box, even though that square might still have several candidates. Medium puzzles always need at least one of these steps or a pair technique.

Most people need 15 to 30 minutes. It drops quickly once scanning for hidden singles becomes a habit.

Newspapers rate puzzles in different ways. Ours are rated by the techniques a solver needs, so a medium grid here never demands anything harder than pairs.
