About themed crosswords

What they are

Themed crosswords pack every answer around a single subject, from animals and food to space, music and the ocean. Eight themes each have six puzzles, mostly 5×5 minis with a few 9×9 small grids, so a whole set makes a neat topic pack for a lesson or a rainy afternoon.

How to play

Pick a theme, choose a puzzle, then solve on screen or print it. Knowing the subject is a big help: if the theme is weather and the clue is 'Heavy snowstorm', you can be fairly sure the answer is BLIZZARD.

Tips

Brainstorm a few theme words before you start; they often turn up as the longest answers. Mix sizes within a theme, starting with a mini to warm up before trying the bigger grid.

Who they suit

Teachers use themed crosswords to reinforce topic vocabulary, parents use them to build on a child's latest obsession, and adults simply enjoy the extra hint that a theme provides.

Printing

Every themed puzzle prints on one page with its answers on another. Print all six from a theme for a ready-made activity booklet.
